Stevenage front gardens are small stages. People see them every time they come home, and they are often the piece that has been left while the back was dealt with. Mrs Marshall’s was redesigned with slab paths, brick edging, a pebble border, a new step, a circular stone feature in the lawn, new turf and pots.
Back gardens on the estates suit the same low maintenance logic as the rest of the county: one sitting area, a lawn you can mow quickly, and planting that is tough rather than precious. Communal land around flats and housing is a maintenance job — grass, hedges, litter, leaves — more often than a design job.
