Hertford is further from the yard than Elstree or Radlett, and it is on the portfolio because the work was worth the trip. Mrs Antony’s back garden was a wasteland. It is now lawn, sandstone, gravel on a change of level, a new fence, and a utility area at the bottom.
Gardens in the county town often drop towards the Lea or sit on older, mixed ground. Levels are designed, not ignored. A low maintenance brief still allows a vegetable patch if that is the part of gardening you actually enjoy; the rest of the garden should not depend on you being out there every Sunday.
East Herts Council covers tree preservation orders in the town. Conifers, fruit trees and large boundary trees are all part of the surgery list when a garden is being opened up.
