Mrs Antony’s back garden

A wasteland in Hertford turned into lawn, paving, gravel and a working end to the garden.

Before and after of a Hertford back garden, from rubble and rough grass to a lawn, sandstone paving, gravel and a new fence.
Before and after. Photographs from the original Hertfordshire Garden Landscapes portfolio.

Mrs Antony’s garden in Hertford was a wasteland: rough grass, spoil and a digger still sitting in the plot. It is now a practical garden, waiting on a few plants in the borders to finish it.

The new layout puts hard landscaping on several levels so the levels themselves give the colour and the change of surface: sandstone paving, gravel, a neat lawn with a paved edge, a new fence, and a utility or vegetable area at the bottom of the garden.

It is the pattern Jake comes back to for family gardens. Enough lawn to use, enough hard surface that the week-to-week work stays small.
