Sandstone driveway, Borehamwood

An old tarmac drive in Borehamwood taken up and relaid in sandstone paving.

Mr Gorden wanted the front of the house to add something to the property, and he wanted the old tarmac drive gone. Sandstone paving was the replacement.

The old surface was excavated first. Hardcore went down as the base and was compacted. A block edge was laid around the outline, then the sandstone slabs, and the joints were pointed to finish.

The sequence matters on a drive more than on a patio. The base is what keeps the slabs sitting level after the first winter.
