The Readshaws’ rear garden

A tired St Albans lawn remade as circles of patio, grass, planting and gravel.

Before and after of a St Albans rear garden, from a plain lawn to curved paving, planting and gravel.
Before and after. Photographs from the original Hertfordshire Garden Landscapes portfolio.

Mr and Mrs Readshaw’s back garden in St Albans was redesigned with both hard and soft landscaping. There is a patio around the conservatory, a low brick wall, and a step up into a garden drawn as a series of circles and curves, held by block edging.

Lawn, planting and gravel are separated rather than blended into one bed. The old photograph is a tired lawn. The new one is a set of places: somewhere to sit by the house, and a route through the rest.

Service: Low maintenance garden design. Town: St Albans.
